Therapy? Is It Right For You?

What does it mean to seek therapy or counseling? It is very common for people to avoid seeking therapy simply because they do not want to be viewed as flawed. A common stigma that seems to be going around is that people who seek therapy are “crazy”, or that there is something wrong with them; however, that isn’t necessarily the case. In reality, there is no such thing as perfect; if you feel that there is such a thing as perfect and that you encompass such perfectionism, then perhaps that’s where you should start first with your counseling. Every single human being has something they can improve on, and that is simply what therapy is: A place to grow and become the best YOU, you can be! Whether it’s dealing with distorted thinking patterns, coping with life changes, managing behavioral problems, or just plain feeling down, there is always something to be benefited from therapy.

Life is tough! Oftentimes, life throws you curveballs! When these curveballs come flying at you and you feel like you’ve struck out of the game, perhaps an outside perspective from a helping hand is just what you need to get yourself back in the game. Therapy is not a place to go and be told how to live your life. On the contrary, it is a place to go to feel safe and grasp a better understanding of your life. Therapy comes with a helping hand from an unbiased opinion, where there is no judging or scolding, or being told what to do. Ultimately your life is your life, and a therapist is just there to be a guiding force to help you decide what you feel is best for you. If you haven’t caught on by now, I’ll let you in on the secret: Therapy is all about YOU! How YOU want to feel, what decisions YOU want to make, what goals YOU want to achieve. In life, the most important person to you should be yourself, and that’s precisely the main goal of therapy—to help YOU become happier with YOU and YOUR life!

Therapist and Counselor in Orlando

There are various approaches a therapist and counselor in Orlando can take to help you achieve your goals, and successfully improve your life. Everyone is unique in their own way, and everyone has taken different paths in life to get to where they are today; this is why your therapist will work with you to determine which path of therapy meets your specific needs. A great thing about therapy is that there are many techniques to try, and when one doesn’t seem to fit just right, you just go on to the next until you find the fit that’s most comfortable for you. Some of these techniques include: Brief Solution-Focused Therapy (SFBT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), REBT, and the list goes on!

Don’t let the negative stigma of therapy keep you from living a happy, fulfilling life. Seeking a therapist in no way means that you are “crazy”, “weak”, “damaged”, or “incapable.” Being your own cheerleader in life means using whatever resources you need to get stronger, and be the best version of you that you can be! Everyone is worthy of being happy and living life to the fullest. Everyone has the potential to achieve the life they want and deserve. (Article contributed by Ashley Campo, UCF psychology major)
